October is Cybersecurity Awareness and Cybercrime Prevention Month, marking 23 years since the #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth campaign began. This international initiative aims to educate individuals and empower them to strengthen their online safety against data threats and cybercrime. As in 2026, this year’s theme, “Don’t Make It Easy for Them,” serves as a timely reminder that while large-scale data breaches and cyberattacks are on the rise, there are simple, effective steps we can all take to protect ourselves online, safeguard our personal information, and make it harder for cybercriminals to succeed.
The past decade has brought rapid changes to the digital ecosystem: disruptive technological advancements, a surge in new users, and more businesses offering services through digital platforms. As a result, more of our sensitive data is now online, sometimes with our knowledge, sometimes through manipulative or illegal methods. Cybersecurity is no longer just a business concern; it is an essential part of everyday life. Practising good cybersecurity can improve our online safety and provide peace of mind for our data, finances, organisations, and families.
The Tatua Digital Resilience Centre is proud to champion this online safety initiative throughout October. In the coming weeks, Tatua will share easy-to-follow tips on essential behaviours such as creating strong passwords, using password managers, enabling multi-factor authentication, recognising phishing attempts, reporting suspicious emails, keeping devices updated, using AI responsibly, and protecting sensitive information. We will also provide additional cyber hygiene tips for individuals and organisations.
