KICTANet Tatua Digital Resilience Centre has taken a proactive step to safeguard Kenya’s democratic future. Recently, the Centre concluded a specialized hybrid training session for the Digital Democracy Cohort II Fellowship, held under the Centre for Research on Elections and Constitutionalism (CRECO) at INUKA NI SISI!.
Strengthening Youth Resilience
The hybrid training was centered around a timely and critical theme: “Strengthening Youth Digital Resilience for Election Integrity in Kenya.” As young people increasingly lead the charge in civic and democratic spaces, they also face mounting risks from targeted harassment to sophisticated cyberattacks. This fellowship aims to flip the script, turning vulnerability into digital strength.
A Diverse Frontline
The cohort brought together a vibrant mix of professionals from media and civil society communications. These individuals are the narrators of Kenya’s democratic journey, and by strengthening their individual capacities, the program enhances the collective ability of their organizations to engage safely with communities and online audiences.
What Was Covered?
The training modules were carefully selected from our Human Rights Defenders Forensic Guidebook to address the specific threats faced by civic actors in Kenya:
- Secure Communications: Learning to keep sensitive information private in a hyper-connected world.
- Kenyan Legal and Regulatory Frameworks: Navigating the complex laws that govern our digital rights and responsibilities.
- Foundations of Cyber Hygiene: Building the daily habits that prevent digital breaches before they happen.
- Combatting Misinformation: Developing the critical eye needed to identify and stop the spread of fake news during election cycles.
- Tackling TFGBV: Addressing Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence, ensuring that digital spaces are safe for everyone, regardless of gender.
- Analyzing Malicious Infrastructure: Gaining technical insights into phishing and other malicious tactics used to compromise digital integrity.
